Choosing the Right Welding Glass Window Shade for Safety and Protection in the UK
Welding can be an intense and hazardous process, with the risk of eye damage from UV and IR radiation. Selecting the right welding glass window shade is crucial for ensuring safety and comfort during the welding process. The appropriate shade depends on the welding method, the material being welded, and the current being used. Below is a guide for selecting the correct shade, in line with UK safety standards.
Oxyfuel Gas Welding and Cutting
For light gas welding and cutting, shades 2–5 are recommended. For medium to heavy gas welding and cutting, shades 6–8 offer optimal protection.
Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW/MIG) and Flux-Cored Arc Welding (FCAW)
For low-current MIG welding (up to 100 amps), shade 10 is sufficient. For moderate-current MIG welding (100–175 amps), shade 11 is necessary. High-current MIG welding requires shades 12–14 to ensure safety.
Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW/TIG)
Shades 10–12 are suitable for TIG welding. Lighter shades are recommended for lower currents and thinner materials, while darker shades should be used for higher currents and thicker materials.
Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW/Stick Welding)
For low-current SMAW (up to 75 amps), shade 10 is sufficient. For moderate-current SMAW (75–200 amps), shade 11 is required. For high-current SMAW, shades 12–14 provide essential protection.
Plasma Arc Cutting
Shades 8–9 are suitable for low to moderate plasma arc cutting. For high-current plasma arc cutting, shades 10–14 ensure adequate protection from the intense light emitted.
By adhering to these recommendations and UK safety standards, welders can prevent eye injuries such as photokeratitis and ensure safe working conditions.
